MCH Data: Teacher Turnover Trends

Teacher Turnover Trends: Impact on Educational Marketing

Within the next month, schools across the United States will be in session. Years ago, teacher rosters looked similar year after year. More recently, teachers are leaving the profession or changing schools at a faster rate than ever before. Many factors contribute, such as low compensation with more responsibility, lack of support, and an overall change in the school environment. As a marketer, it can be difficult to stay on top of all these personnel changes. According to ERS, 23% of teachers left their school during the 2022-2023 school year. This is a decrease from 26.2% from the 2021-2022 school year, but still higher than pre-pandemic numbers.

ERS also found turnover is highest in districts where there are more economically disadvantaged students (see Quartile 4 below).

Staying on top of these changes can be daunting for most marketers. In 2012, MCH completely revamped the way we capture names and job titles. When we implemented this technology, we learned that personnel changes happen throughout the school year due to retirements, new job opportunities, and leaves of absence. This was a game-changer for many of our customers trying to be the first in the door to promote their products. Throughout the years, we have improved our technology and what was fast before, is faster now.

Since the beginning of July, MCH has added more than 270,000 new names to the database and that number will continue to grow as the school year gets underway. Additionally, school district compilation has begun. Districts are compiled differently due to the multiple roles many educators perform within the school district. As districts are updated, changes are reflected in our database weekly.
